God is an imaginary friend

On Monday, the Boulder Atheists along with the Colorado Coalition of Reason (COCORE), will be putting up three new billboards in Denver and Colorado Springs that are sure to get the attention of believers and non-believers alike. The billboards will read: “God Is An Imaginary Friend – Choose Reality, It Will Be Better For All Of Us.”

Personally, I’m not sure that this is going to accomplish much more than reinforcing the faith of believers, while causing everyone else to simply roll their eyes. I’m reminded of the Aesops Fable regarding the sun and the wind.

The Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveller coming down the road, and the Sun said: “I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of us can cause that traveller to take off his cloak shall be regarded as the stronger. You begin.” So the Sun retired behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow as hard as it could upon the traveller. But the harder he blew the more closely did the traveller wrap his cloak round him, till at last the Wind had to give up in despair. Then the Sun came out and shone in all his glory upon the traveller, who soon found it too hot to walk with his cloak on.

Kindness effects more than severity.

I realize that a simple billboard cannot possibly convey all the information necessary to enable someone to weigh the facts against the faith, but this just feels like beating someone about the head with a blunt instrument, rather than trying to fuel their own desire for knowledge through education and scientific explanation.

(An interesting sidenote here, is that Aesops Fables make a great deal more sense than most of the Bible, and could probably be a good solid foundation for a half-sensible religion. But  I digress…)

On the other hand, if religious groups can post grossly presumptive billboards such as these…

One nation under me

There’s plenty more billboard nonsense over at GodSpeaks.com, if you can stomach it.
